'Un autoportrait à la chaussette trouée' 2022
In 2022, Nicolas Bourthoumieux is invited to conceive a project for the residency and events of Radicales 1924. Saint-Cirq Lapopie is a dead village by virtue of being preserved; it is the opposite of a ruin. Despite the death of the main subject of his research project, Michael Collins, this invitation to join Radicale 1924 is once again relevant: "Try again. Fail again. Fail better," said Samuel Beckett.
For the public event in 2022, the idea is to resume these explorations by starting with what should have been the end: the burial of the foot casting. Not Collins', but Bourthoumieux's.
A self-portrait with a holey sock. The end becomes the seed. It is a cycle driven by failure. From what was supposed to be a culmination emerges a new exploration that will develop during the residency until 2024.
The sculpture will be underground, patiently waiting to be found. Like a fossilized dinosaur egg. Like in Pompeii. And maybe we will forget to unearth it.
